WASHINGTON (CNS) – Richard G., Auxiliary Bishop of Pope Francis Rockville Center. Henning was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island.

Bishop Henning, 58, has been assistant at Rockville Center since 2018. As coadjutor, he will join Providence Bishop Thomas J., 74, who has led the statewide diocese since 2005. Helps Tobin.
The coadjutor automatically becomes head of the diocese when the bishop dies or resigns.
The changes were announced on November 23 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Vatican’s nuncio to the United States.
Bishop Henning is “a wise pastor, a gifted theologian and a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Then the Diocese of Providence will receive a truly good shepherd,” said Bishop John O. of Rockville Center. Barres said in a statement.
“A biblical scholar with a strong mind, Bishop Henning combines a deep knowledge of Scripture with a great passion for God’s word,” he said. “He was a gifted teacher and shared his love of God’s word in classrooms and courses throughout his ministry, especially as a seminary professor.”
He added that Bishop Henning “loves being a priest and he loves being a priest.” The prelate also “has a beautiful heart for the Hispanic community and is greatly enriched by this ministry,” Bishop Barres added.
“On the eve of Thanksgiving, I give thanks to the almighty God from whom ‘all blessings flow’!” Bishop Henning said in a statement.
He thanked the Pope, “for the call to serve as coadjutor bishop” in Providence, and Archbishop Pierre.
He thanked Bishop Barres for his “encouragement and mentorship,” said he looked forward to the opportunity to learn from Bishop Tobin, and thanked retired Bishop Evans for his “priestly and episcopal testimony.”
“I am grateful for the many people who have testified to me of their love and living faith,” he continued. “I think of my family and friends, my fellow priests and all the men and women who have encouraged and supported me in the work of evangelization.”
“This is a time of deep reflection and a humble acknowledgment of my dependence on God,” Bishop Henning said.
He was rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, New York, when Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Rockville Center.
Bishop Barres has named a new assistant to head a newly created office to help promote missionary growth in the diocese. Bishop Henning is Vicar for Parish Evangelism and Pastoral Planning.
A year before the bishop’s ordination, Bishop Barres named the missionary at the time. Henning became interim vicar of the central vicariate of the diocese and worked closely with Bishop Barres on projects related to the evangelization of the parish.
Bishop Henning was born on October 17, 1964 in Rockville Center to Richard and Maureen Henning, the first of their five children. He grew up in Valley Stream, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, and attended Holy Name of Mary Parish, where he attended grammar school.
Bishop Henning attended Chaminade High School in Minneola, New York and credits the Marianists as a major influence on his faith and commitment to learning.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1986 and a Master of Arts in History in 1988 from St. John’s University in New York.
He went to the seminary and later worked as a rector. He was ordained to the diocese on May 30, 1992 at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center.
For the next five years, he served as pastor of St. Peter Alcantara Church in Port Washington, New York. In that assignment, he did a great pastoral work in a large parish school, serving Spanish-speaking Catholics.
In 1997, Bishop McGann enrolled him in graduate school in Sacred Scripture. Bishop Henning received his licentiate in biblical theology in 2000 from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and in 2007 from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, or Angelica, in Rome.
After graduation, Bishop Henning joined the faculty of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, where he taught Scripture for more than 10 years. He was appointed rector of the seminary in 2012.
Bishop Henning is also known for working with international priests serving in the United States
In a Nov. 23 announcement, Bishop Henning paid tribute to three bishops of Rockville Center: He was ordained a priest by the late Bishop John R. McGann, who presided over the diocese from 1976 to 2000; Bishop William F. Murphy, who led the diocese from 2001 until his retirement in 2016; and “enriched by close co-operation” with Bishop Barres, Bishop Murphy’s successor.
Bishop Henning added that he shared his priesthood “with a wonderful presbyterate. I will always be grateful for the gift of these 30 years.”
