Biden-Xi Summit

China’s president has warned his American counterpart not to cross Beijing’s red line over Taiwan. Xi Jinping issued the warning during a three-hour meeting with Joe Biden ahead of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. According to Chinese media, Xi emphasized that Taiwan is the ‘cornerstone’ of the political foundation of bilateral relations. He said, however, that he looks forward to working with Biden to get Beijing-Washington relations back on track. Biden, for his part, said the US wants to manage its differences with China to prevent the competition from turning into a conflict. Both leaders reiterated the need to manage their relations in a peaceful and fair manner. Tensions between Washington and Beijing have been high in recent months, particularly over so-called US interference in Taiwan, an island that Beijing claims as its own.

EU sanctions on Iran

The European Union has imposed new sanctions on Iran over its response to recent protests in the country. An EU statement said 29 people and three organizations were the targets of what it called Tehran’s widespread use of force against peaceful protesters. Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and several army and police officers are on the sanctions list. Press TV is one of the three blacklisted sites. Penalties include travel bans and asset bans. Tehran has warned of a proportionate and firm response to the EU’s new measures. The bloc introduced similar sanctions last month, targeting more than a dozen Iranian individuals and institutions. Iran rejected the ban as a clear example of interference in its internal affairs. Tehran also described the move as further evidence that the EU is using human rights as a means to achieve its political goals.

Terrorist attack in Istanbul

Turkish police say they have arrested 46 people in connection with Sunday’s deadly attack in the city center of Istanbul. A Syrian woman is among the prisoners who police say planted the bomb. According to the police, the woman admitted that she received training from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK, in northern Syria. But the Kurdish militia has denied any involvement in the bombing. The US-backed Kurdish militia in Syria known as the SDF has also denied any role in the attack. The bomb left at least 6 people dead and more than 80 injured. The blast happened on Istanbul’s busy Istiklal street, popular with locals and tourists.
