Eddie Izzard has received abuse aimed at her as a member of the trans community since declaring her bid to become the Labor MP for Sheffield almost four weeks ago.

The comedian, 60, who studied at Sheffield University, says despite suffering backlash and transphobic abuse, the reaction to his candidacy for Sheffield’s new Labor MP has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

“There are some transphobic people who throw abuse at me and people look at it, it’s pretty strong, but it seems to be a small minority,” Eddie told PinkNews.

The comedian spent time studying in Sheffield in the 1980s, before going on to launch a successful career in entertainment. Now, 42 years later, he has returned to represent the South Yorkshire town in the hope of helping it “reach its true potential”.

Eddie admitted that she is not too keen on the idea of ​​becoming Prime Minister, but would like the opportunity to enter parliament as Labor minister.

She explained that she does not want her campaign to be defined by her gender, although politics is currently full of debates about the lives of trans people.

Eddie said, “I think so [the Tories] they try to feed the fires, they try to create fights where there is no fight.”

“I am very concerned about LGBTQ+ rights.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appears to be rolling back the protections put in place for the trans community, after appointing equality minister Kemi Badenoch who has a history of hostility towards trans rights.

Eddie Izzard said he hopes to achieve a fairer future for everyone and believes it is something the Labor party is fighting for. She argued that Liz Truss made changes while in power that only benefited a few and claimed the Tory government was only focusing on them.

As a Labor campaigner, Eddie supports Keir Starmer, as she has supported all Labor leaders in the past. However, recently the Tories have not been the only politicians who have faced a backlash surrounding the Trans discussion.

Keir Starmer, 60, who is the current leader of the Labor party, has come under fire for comments he made during a Mumsnet interview, where they discussed trans youth, consent and trans participation in sport.

Referring to the interview, Eddie said that he does not have answers about “heated” trans discussions, while acknowledging that “these questions are very difficult for our time” to understand.

The comedian added that heated discussions are better than nothing, as she recalled coming out for the first time during the 1980s, saying: “I wasn’t even considered a person. I was like a non-person or a toxic person, certainly not a person who is part of society.”
