YouTube is putting its Shorts — vertical, looping, short videos — on the biggest and most horizontal screen in your life: the TV.
Google-owned YouTube, which has 2 billion users per month, is the largest online video resource. In short, Google’s video giant is trying to compete with the sensation surrounding TikTok, the short-form social video app from Chinese company ByteDance. YouTube launched Shorts more than two years ago, starting in India and then expanding to the US and other countries.
By bringing Shorts to TV, YouTube is breaking the vertical, short format on mobile, where these types of clips are shot, posted and watched regularly.
“When we introduced this new format, we improved the experience for both the mobile operator and the viewer,” said Neal Mohan, YouTube’s chief product officer, in a post. While bringing Shorts to television may seem like “the next natural step, an incredible amount of thought and care went into bringing this vertical, mobile-first experience to the big screen,” he added.
On Monday, Google said that to watch the shorts this way, you’ll need to use the YouTube app on a connected TV from 2019 and later, a gaming console or streaming device. YouTube even made a video tutorial on how the Shorts appear on TVs and how to use your remote to watch and like them.
