After the service, all enthusiasm was back. He was more responsive than ever and that was really refreshing.

I had just finished a trip to Pondicherry with my friend. It was a great experience. Make a whole thread out of it. Read it if you haven’t already!

By the time we returned, the bike had just marked 40 km and was due for service. Last service was 35k when I bought him. So it’s been 5000 miles of ownership so far. Well, those were such good times!

I drove to my mechanic to get him serviced. He also asked him to check the electricity as it was the only thing that failed during the trip. Completed the job over the weekend (Basic service includes flush, oil change, carb cleaning, air filter cleaning or replacement, spark plug cleaned or replaced, muffler cleaned, chain lubrication and tightening, and some work on the brakes).

The rear brake pedal was already stiff and sticky, requiring me to use my heel to lift it after each braking episode. It’s visually troubling. The mechanic fixed that during the service and did a great job, creating a new spring system that he assured would last a long time. So far, that has been true. Will write about that in detail later. It might be helpful for some of you.

Regarding the electrical, he told me it was a faulty RR Unit (Regulator Rectifier). He had already installed the battery and told me to install the RR Unit as soon as possible. I figured I’d do it later as I was on a tight budget and used my bike mostly during the day, anyway.

Then something amazing happened. I was on my daily commute to college when I stepped outside, suddenly the horn started working. Then, I looked at the flashlight and found that it worked too! It just seemed to fix itself and still works today. What a relief, not to mention how amazing all this pain has been!

But it wasn’t the only surprise. After the service, all enthusiasm was back. He was more responsive than ever and that was really refreshing. In many ways, it reminded me of how he was after the first service he received after I bought him. That is the importance of timely delivery of service. Although most of these 2 old plants have lived a hard life without seeing service for a long time, they still run like charm.

However, when we are in the know, we know to never throw away our machines. This is the only way to make them last a lifetime, which at the end of the day, is what some of us really want!
