A combined graduation ceremony for two government tertiary institutions saw 290 students receive vocational education certificates today, in Nuku’alofa.

The Tonga Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) awarded trade certificates to 215 students, in welding, light automotive vehicles, carpentry, electrical engineering, fittings and machinery, panel beating, spray painting and plumbing.

The Tonga Maritime Polytechnic Institute (TMPI) awarded certificates to 75 students, in general qualification, able-bodied seaman and master/engineer Class 6.

Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training, Hon. Hu’akavemeiliku in presenting the certificates congratulated the students and encouraged them to study more.

“Your success today is not only for your family, community, church, but also for the country,” said the Prime Minister.

He said the new TVET coordination unit established in the Ministry of Education in April of this year was instrumental in this important effort and they thanked for the support of the Australian Government.

“We live in an era where professional skills should not be neglected and university degrees given the utmost importance. With more opportunities opening up more and more for young people and adults, the emphasis should be on the equal division in academics and vocational education and increase confidence for all”.

The ceremony, attended by a full house of family and friends in the Queen Salote Memorial Hall, was the last graduation of the two institutes under the Ministry of Education, since next year it is expected to be under a new National University.
