New Delhi: A Delhi Police van carrying Aftab Poonawala was attacked by a group of people in Rohini on Monday evening.
Reports said that Aftab was being taken from the forensic science laboratory in Rohini when two sword-wielding men tried to break into the Delhi Police van in which he was sitting.
Aftab Poonawalla’s van was attacked by two men who tried to block the vehicle with their car. The visual shows a policeman assigned to guard the accused flashing his service revolver to control the situation.
One of the attackers told media persons that “we were waiting for him to come out of the lab so that we can attack him to give justice to the respect of our community.”
The attackers are Hindu army
The attack appears to be a security lapse in Delhi as security concerns persist after his arrest for the heinous crime. Public anger against Aftab grew and many factions threatened to attack him at an opportunity.
The attackers, said to belong to the Hindu Sena, a right-wing outfit, were waiting outside the FSL lab in a car armed with sharp weapons like swords and hammers since 8 am.
The assailants claimed that they do not care about law and order if anyone harms the women of their community, as they are like their mothers and sisters. The party was heard to give such slogans Long live the Hindu army. Bharat Mata ki Jai, Jai Sriram.
“We are ready to go to jail. We have got swords from gurudwaras in Delhi and Gurgaon. We are ten. We will get rifles and pistols. If anyone hurts our daughters, sisters, we will not spare him.” One of the attackers said while being taken into police custody.
Aftab Punawala is unharmed in this incident
Reports said that Aftab escaped unhurt in the incident in the car which later went to Tihar Jail where he was lodged.
The remaining sessions of Aftab Poonawala’s polygraph examination took place today at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Rohini.
